Is a 4" Granite backsplash necessary if you are planning to tile the backsplash?

I would ask him if there is a benefit to adding the 4 inches. He may be thinking about water or other liquids running across the counter which would not damage the granite, but the caulking on tile is more prone to mold, mildew, staining, etc. Otherwise, I think that it is strictly a personal preference.
